The nobility had an extraordinary interest in exotic animals. There were many menageries in palace gardens and country estates. But also songbirds, birds of prey (such as falcons for falconry) and the noblemen's friends par excellence, the horse and the dog, attracted the attention of noblemen. With the cat the relationship was more ambivalent, and vermin were hated. This multilingual journal is a forum for scholarly articles on research into the history of nobility and patricianship and related research areas such as genealogy, heraldry and castles. The articles have different perspectives: political, socioeconomic, gender, identity and material culture.
