This book presents the idiosyncratic oeuvre and life of the Groningen architect Frits Peutz. Before World War II, he settled in South Limburg, to build improbably much there. Imperturbably, he worked on a repertoire that is now internationally highly regarded. One of his most iconic projects is the Heerlen Town Hall, now a national monument. After the Huis op de Linde, the Retraitehuis and the Glass Palace, this was his fourth project for the city. A "romantic rationalist," Peutz was an inspiration to architects such as Jo Coenen, Wiel Arets, Wim van den Bergh and Francine Houben. The Council House, renovated and expanded in 2023 to become the new City Office by Mecanoo architects, was the first city hall to also serve as an exhibition space for visual art.
