"The Island" is an architectural and urban planning project by Marek Sapinski based purely on imagination. The idea originated playfully in the mind of Marek, then 12 years old, who lives in 1960s Poland and, under the influence of his father, state architect Janusz Sapinski, begins to draw buildings. What begins simply at a kitchen table with pencil drawings in a checkered notebook develops over the next 50 years, first in 2D, later in 3D into more than 20 cities that eventually even claim an island of their own that will soon be called Republika Marka. 'The Island' is a very personal document about how Marek, now longtime urban planner, political refugee from the 1970s and Polish Dutchman, put a completely new country on the map with its own history and development from a singular vision.
