Art & ecology: artistic practices for symmetrical life
This book was co-researched and co-edited by the art planning group Vice Versa (Ji-won Kim, Kyung-hee Lee, Hye-jin Yeo, and Bora Hong) and curator Haeju Kim. Vice Versa embarked on trips to Brazil and Argentina in 2015 to research ecology and art. In 2016, it presented a number of projects related to ecology and art under the title "A Night on the Galaxy Railway." Conducted chiefly at Gallery Factory in Seoul's Tongin neighborhood, "Night" included workshops, lectures, exhibitions and more. Argentinian curator Gala Berger shared the vital, self-organizing activity taking place amid lacking infrastructure through the Buenos Aires institution La Ene and joined Seoul participants in re-staging a performance by Brazilian artist Lygia Clark. Catalina León organized the exhibition Midsummer Winter with works showing organic connections between places and life. Consisting of general spaces sheltering the body, her work bears similarities with Oiticica's participatory perspective as described in this book. Camilla Berner presented a site-specific work in which she investigated Seoul's undeveloped spaces and recorded the plants growing there; David Cardona presented ecology-themed experimental films from South America.
