The Hague architect Franciscus (Frans) Lodewijk Johannes Lourijsen (1889-1934) is one of the hitherto unknown architects who built much in The Hague. Frans Lourijsen experienced a short but active life, in which he manifested himself as a skilful businessman and endowed designer. Together with colleagues such as Dirk Roosenburg, Co Brandes and Jan Wils, he is an important exponent of the "New Hague School," an architectural movement inspired by the work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Starting in 1925, Lourijsen focused on a newly developed residential type: the residential hotel. This type of apartment building was equipped with numerous practical and modern amenities, such as a central kitchen, a restaurant, garbage chutes and elevators. Such "apartment buildings" offered a solution to the shortage of service personnel.
