DASH : experimental housing = experimental housing construction
The current housing crisis calls for creative solutions, but the dominance of the market seems to leave little room for truly innovative initiatives. In contrast, between 1968 and 1980, there was plenty of experimentation with housing design, made possible in part by the then Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning. It led to a sampling of alternatives to the sameness of mass housing of the era.
This edition of DASH takes the historical program Experimental Housing as an inspiring starting point in a search for alternative housing forms, typologies and construction methods. Appealing Dutch examples are highlighted, such as the groundbreaking Under the Arches in Zwolle by Aldo van Eyck and Theo Bosch, and the Four Squares in Alkmaar by Abe Bonnema. These are complemented by exceptional examples from abroad, from Sweden, Britain, Spain, Australia, Israel, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Interviews with architectural historian Mieke Dings and former Chief Government Architect Floris Alkemade elaborate on the challenges and opportunities for housing renewal driven by a proactive government and creative market players. Delft Architectural Studies on Housing (DASH) is produced by TU Delft's Architecture and Housing Design group.
