(Re)Source - about authenticity and manipulation -, shows the work of fourteen artists and designers from home and abroad . The exhibition addresses universal issues about resources, such as raw materials, food and energy. The artists and designers examine the relationship between resources and the concepts of authenticity and manipulation. In doing so, they focus on both contemporary visual culture and the world of biotechnology. The setting against which the exhibition takes shape is unique. Objects can be found in three historic locations: the Belmonte Arboretum, the former tropical greenhouse of the Institute of Plant Taxonomy, and forty test subjects of the former Laboratory of Microbiology. With their works, the artists and designers balance at the point where transition becomes friction. That friction manifests itself in frantic discussions of manipulation and authenticity. Manipulation in biotechnology - certainly of food - is viewed with suspicion by many. What is right and what is wrong? What is real and unreal? A battle also rages in visual culture between proponents and opponents of manipulated originals. Nevertheless, artists are pre-eminent enablers of recreating originality. With sculptures, film, installations and performance, the participating artists have given substance to the theme of (Re)source in their own way. Some of them enter into a dialogue with scientists from Wageningen UR.
