In Almere, people are building their own homes. That sounds logical, but it is very different from how we in the Netherlands are used to making our cities. Ever since 1901, others have determined for us what our homes will look like. We have come to take that for granted. We think it should be the other way around: that it is normal to design and build your own home. In Almere we challenge people to design their own living environment. We challenge them to learn to do that again. We challenge them to be creative. We do this with the words 'I am building my house in Almere'. This challenge applies to all generations. For old and young. We did not hesitate when the makers of the Klokhuis asked us if there was room in Almere for a real KlokHUIS, a house designed entirely by children. Of course it is possible in Almere! Hundreds of children have thought about what their dream house could look like. From all the ideas, the jury chose the best designs. Architect Jord den Hollander combined the winning drawings into one design: the KlokHUIS in Almere.
