Today, we know Amsterdam's Nieuwe Kerk on Dam Square primarily as a national church, home to May 4 commemorations, royal inaugurations and major exhibitions. But the Nieuwe Kerk has a history of more than six centuries. Six centuries in which Amsterdammers built, embellished and restored the church, had their children baptized there, buried family members, listened to sermons and whispered prayers. The book De Nieuwe Kerk van Amsterdam, edited by Gert Eijkelboom and Gabri van Tussenbroek, offers the reader a journey through that rich history, from its tender beginnings in the Middle Ages, through its conversion from Roman Catholic parish church to Protestant church in 1578, its dramatic fire and restoration in the mid-seventeenth century, to the church of royal ceremonies and World Press Photo. The New Church of Amsterdam includes contributions by Remieg Aerts, Gert Eijkelboom, Merlijn Hurx, Carolina Lenarduzzi, Gabri van Tussenbroek, Anneke van Veen and Pieter Vlaardingerbroek.
