Architect Joseph Cuypers (1861-1949) was a unique and innovative Dutch architect. At a time when artisanal, traditional architecture set the tone - the neo-Gothic style that brought his father Pierre Cuypers great fame (the Central Station and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam) - son Joseph sought inspiration elsewhere. In countless designs for churches, villas, residential complexes and for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, he allowed himself to be influenced by contemporary formal language and stylistic features from the distant and other faiths. He also showed himself to be a modern urban planner with a penchant for garden suburbs. Over the years, his style changed from traditional to expressionist, but he always kept an eye on the user. Upon entering, the churchgoer had to feel the sacred atmosphere and have a maximum view of the altar. He came up with his own design for each place and each resident, so that his buildings always surprise.
