It is perhaps the most famous tree in the world: the chestnut tree on Prinsengracht that Anne Frank, locked in the Secret Annex, could see from the skylight. Her only view of the outside world. From the branches, the leaves, the candles and the fruit, she could see the change of seasons; she saw the birds, she saw the free world. In her diary, she poignantly describes the hope this tree gave her.
