The Willem Tunnel : information and criticism
On June 24, 1971, the Rotterdam City Council finally gets a chance to express its opinion on the plans of B. and W. to build a car tunnel between Rotterdam North and South. Finally, because preparatory work has already been done at various places in the city, without the City Council ever having had a chance to express an opinion on the purpose of that work. Why must the Rottetracee be built and parts of Crooswijk and the Old North demolished? Why must part of Noordereiland be plowed over and houses in Feijenoord demolished? Why did the Vaanweg (=six-lane highway) have to spike into Rotterdam-South? Answer: for the Willemstunnel. Now then, after all this preparatory demolition and rooting, the city council gets to choose between yes or no Willemstunnel.
