Millions of books are printed and sold every day. In the Middle Ages, things were different. Books were precious, not meant to be carelessly handled or donkey-eared. Making a book took a long time and involved many craftsmen, such as the parchment maker who made animal skins ready for writing, the copyist who patiently transcribed letter by letter and the miniaturist who painted illustrations with a fine brush. And why did a miniaturist need wolf teeth? With the introduction of printing, books were finished much faster. But again, a whole team came into play: the papermaker, the letter cutter, the typesetter and the printer. Printed hundreds of copies at a time, the book became more accessible to all.
