Above the sofa in the sitting room of Sonneveld House hangs a seascape with two botters by W.B. Tholen: Behind the Dam (Enkhuizen). It is an impressionist painting that belongs to the Hague School. Its gray-brown tones fit well with the sober color scheme of the sitting room. When the Sonnevelds moved into their new house on Jongkindstraat in 1933, they took almost nothing with them from their old home. The entire interior was redesigned and furniture and upholstery were purchased new. Only clothes, books, a few paintings and a sculpture by John Raedecker moved with them. After the death of Gésine Sonneveld-Bos in 1972, all the paintings from her estate were auctioned off. Since 2007, Tholen's painting has again hung above the sofa. Based on photographs, the painting was given a new frame. Sonneveld House was completed in 1933 and was built for the Sonneveld family to a design by the architectural firm Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. They were also responsible for the interior, working closely with W.H. Gispen.
