The Chancellery is a building with a dual function: embassy and consulate. The building is situated on a narrow and deep plot in the center of Paramaribo. Therefore it was chosen to situate the two oval building parts, embassy and consulate, shifted relative to each other. This creates a designed and shaped space between the plot boundary and the building. The front building section houses the consular department, In the rear part of the building the embassy consisting of a basement with installations and four layers of office space for department of general affairs, development cooperation, defense, justice, connections and foreign affairs. the offices are grouped around two voids. The traffic areas are designed to provide a degree of privacy and a variation in scale. Of course, the building was designed to function in the tropics. The windows in the facades that open as "large" fences and the overhead lights in the corridors connect to the voids, providing cross ventilation. The overhanging roofs and permanent awnings provide shade on the facades. The "open" void with the water basin is also equipped with a permanent awning on the roof, allowing sharp light to be fi ltered before entering through the windows of the offices adjacent to the void. The water basin with its fountains at the entrances give an illusion of cooling. The overhangs and louvers around the building match the atmosphere of the historic city and the filigree character of the many awnings and overhangs of the wooden houses.
