Plate from breakfast service
Plate of yellow-green breakfast set by H.P. Berlage and P. Zwart. The 20-piece service includes: a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl, rusk can, butter dish, egg set, six breakfast plates, six cups and saucers and two milk cups. Some of the dinnerware is on the dining table in Sonneveld House. Completed in 1933, the house was built for the Sonneveld family to a design by the architectural firm Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. They were also responsible for the interior, working closely with W.H. Gispen. The design of this service is tailored to the machine pressing of glass. Hexagon and circle are the basic shapes of the molds with which each part was pressed at once. The properties of the material made industrial mass production an obvious choice. But the distinct shape of this design did not catch on, so it remained in small production.
