L. Deleu Luc Deleu was born in Duffel, Belgium, in 1944. He graduated as an architect from the Higher Institute of Architecture Sint Lucas in Brussels in 1969. In 1970, he founded his own firm, TOP Office (Turn On Planning), a firm for urban planning and architecture. Deleu is critical of existing architecture, which often arises from economic considerations, and develops unconventional, provocative ideas and designs. His work emphasizes the ethical side of architecture. From the founding of his firm TOP Office, he has worked to expand the usual urban planning concept into a planology that functions on a global scale, "orbanism. Here, architecture serves as a tool to better organize the earth's space, make it more comfortable and intense. Within this concept, the individual remains important: living in a livable environment and the freedom of the individual are paramount to him. Since 1995, together with his office, he has been working on "The Unadapted City," a design-based urban planning study. Based on a quantification of the required facilities and urban functions, the bureau arrives at an unadapted spatial organization. The proposed volumes can be detached from their program before the city is occupied. For example, there are plenty of cinemas planned, but they can also be used as gymnasiums, mushroom farms or lodgings for mantlebavians. 'The Unadapted City' comes about in successive phases. After the previously designed neighborhoods 'Brikabrak' (1998), 'Dinkytown' (1998-99) and 'Octopus' (1999), 'Vipcity' is the fourth stage: a large subdivision for 38,000 inhabitants in detached houses with a 7.5-km-long city axis. Deleu was able to realize a number of homes in the Netherlands. In 1992, Hotel Stok was built, a residential house in Poortugaal near Rotterdam. In the same place, a Three-Generation House is being built to his design. In Tervuren, Belgium, his Red Residence can be found. In 1988, Deleu worked on an alternative use of the Rotterdam Hefbrug in connection with the arrival of the railroad tunnel under the Maas River in Rotterdam. Note: L.
