Jacob d'Oliveira was born on April 20, 1908, in Amsterdam. On January 17, 1978, he died there. From 1927-1930 Jaap worked independently as a technical and scientific photographer in Amsterdam-Zuid. In 1930 he got a place as an assistant in the studio of Albert Renger-Patsch in Essen. He worked for three years, from 1932-1934 in partnership with Hans Spies. After that, Jacob worked independently again. He taught photography at the Institute of Arts and Crafts in Amsterdam from 1945-1971.
