A. Bos (1894-1984) Alexander Bos (Assen, 1894) began his career as an engineer with the railroads in the former Dutch East Indies. In 1927, he returned to the Netherlands and worked for several years as an architect at Philips. In 1931 he joined the Urban Development Department in Rotterdam until his retirement. From 1945 until his retirement in 1959 as director of the Public Housing Department. Alexander Bos is best known for his book "The City of the Future, the Future of the City. This 1946 book was published at an extremely auspicious time, as the Netherlands had to begin reconstruction. It provided an urban planning and socio-cultural analysis of the city and contained many practical tips on the relationship of high-rise and low-rise buildings and the level of amenities in neighborhoods. Bos was an advocate of the neighborhood idea and believed that neighborhoods were the building blocks of the city. The city of the future influenced many modern architects and was a guideline for the reconstruction of Rotterdam and for numerous other postwar neighborhoods.
