Gouwetor, Frits Johan

(Bonas essay) F.J. Gouwetor (1903-1972) J.A. Kuiper (1907-2003), Frits Johan Gouwetor (1903-1972) and jhr. J. de Ranitz (1909-1993) form an architectural firm together after World War II. Kuiper graduates from the Technische Hogeschool (TH) in Delft in 1933 and then becomes an employee of Stad en Landschap in Zuid-Holland. In 1938 he joins the architectural firm of Granpré Molière, Verhagen & Kok. From 1940 he and Verhagen formed a firm, which was joined by Gouwetor (1935 TH graduate) and Mr. De Ranitz (1934 TH graduate). Verhagen dies in 1950 and the firm is named Kuiper, Gouwetor & Verhagen, later continued under the name Kuiper, Gouwetor & De Ranitz. The firm plays an important role in the reconstruction of Rotterdam. For example, the urban design for the Hundred and Ten Tomorrow neighborhood came from the firm's drawing board. One of the partners, F.J. Gouwetor, in collaboration with P. Mulder, realizes the Calandlyceum (1957-1962) in this district. This building combines a modern pavilion design with a traditional hall school. The businesslike and functionally designed building thus reconciles two trends in school construction. The firm is also responsible for housing for the elderly on the Slinge and low-rise buildings in the middle strips of the Pendrecht district. Outside Rotterdam, the firm realizes, among other things, the Technical School in Hoorn (1956-1959), one of the few buildings here representing the Nieuwe Bouwen.
