Johan Pieter Fokker (Batavia, 1889) studied architecture at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft from 1907 to 1915. After his studies, he worked for several years at the Landsgebouwendienst under D.E.C. Knuttel and J.W. Hanrath. He then settled as an architect and garden architect in The Hague and finally in Wassenaar. Fokker gained fame mainly as an architect of country houses in places like Wassenaar and Aerdenhout. The houses were built in a traditional German-classical and English country house style and there was a lot of attention for the coherence between house and garden. In addition, Fokker was also active as a publicist. He wrote articles and also the books Het Eigen Huis (1931) and Tuinen in Holland (1932). Both books have been reprinted several times. After World War II, Fokker also worked for some time at the National Planning Service, where he worked on recreational development plans. Fokker died in 1963.
