Thomas Romein, born Dec. 16, 1811 and died Feb. 24, 1881 in Leeuwarden. City architect from 1845-1881. He designed many iconic buildings in Leeuwarden: the Manege, the Palace of Justice, the Stock Exchange building, the Municipal Gymnasium, the Main Guard. Romein was also involved in the filling of the Eewal and Nieuweburen canals. He lived from 1870 in the building designed by himself Arendstuin 41.
