Alph.Th.J. Margry, architect B.N.A., and A.J.M. Jacobs, architect h.b.o., Rotterdam Initially, the firm's founder - Evert Margry, who came from the illustrious office of architect Pierre Cuypers - started out in the same Roman Catholic tradition as his teacher. Evert Margry was the son of Jan Margry, who co-founded the society Arti et Amicitiae. Evert designed (neo-Gothic) churches, monasteries and parsonages, often as a complete commission including the interior and furniture. After his death in 1891, his brother Albert, together with Jos Snickers, took over the firm and the order portfolio was gradually broadened and also renewed. This process gained momentum in 1912 with the arrival of Jos Margry, Albert's son. Especially in the reconstruction period, orders for hospitals and housing became more and more regular and the use of new materials and building techniques was introduced as a matter of course. In 1953, the leadership of the office passed to the third generation of Margry: Alphons Margry. Together with Ton Jacobs, he managed to bind large and structural clients to the firm, such as the Franciscus Hospital in Roosendaal and the Vreugdenhof nursing home in Amsterdam. When, in 1970, At Tuns and Hans Horsting joined the management of the still growing agency, new branches came into the picture in order to better serve the growing working area. With the retirement of Alphons Margry and Ton Jacobs in 1980, the name of the office changed from Margry Jacobs Tuns Horsting to Tuns+Horsting architects. A new phase then began.
