J. de Leuveling Tjeenk (1885-1940) The oeuvre of J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk as far as is known is not very large. Jan de Bie or Tjeenk, as he was also called, is better known as an administrator. He was chairman of the BNA and chairman of the Exhibition Board. Bie Leuveling Tjeenk's oeuvre is not large, but it is one with some notable buildings. After building several villas in the Gooi region, he began work on the Jaarbeurs buildings at Vredenburg in Utrecht. He designed them in a style inspired by Amsterdam School but then elaborated more cubistically. Because the first phase of the fair buildings consisted of three separate buildings that were built at intervals due to lack of money, the realization took many years. After the first phase was completed, there was soon an expansion. Because of the construction time and the expansion, Bie Leuveling Tjeenk worked on the Jaarbeurs buildings almost his entire life. More than as an architect, Bie Leuveling Tjeenk was active as an administrator. For example, as chairman of the Exhibition Board, he was responsible for exhibitions that were to be held alternately in Amsterdam and Rotterdam every three years. The lack of money prevented this from happening. But the Dutch government's order also played a major role. The government preferred that the Netherlands participate in the World's Fairs rather than organize exhibitions themselves. His participation in the 1925 World's Fair was such a success that the Dutch government knighted him in the Order of the Dutch Lion. De Bie was also the one who set up the photo archive of the Exhibition Council. This led to participation in many smaller exhibitions abroad. For example, photographs of buildings and interiors were exhibited in Zurich and Winterthur. In 1937 he was appointed Commissioner General of the Exhibition Council. During the preparations for the World's Fair in Rome, he died.
