F. Bakker Schut (1903-1966)
Frits Bakker Schut was born in Rotterdam on January 29, 1903. He attended school at the Nederlandsch Lyceum in The Hague and studied at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft from 1921 to 1927, graduating in the latter year with a degree in civil engineering. In 1933 he obtained a doctorate in technical sciences on a dissertation on "Industry and Housing Construction," and in 1935 he passed the kandidaats-examen in law.
After initially working in private industry for three years, he became an engineer at Gemeentewerken in Groningen in 1931. In 1935 he became inspector of public housing for Groningen and then in 1938 for North Holland and the northern part of South Holland.
In 1941, Bakker Schut was appointed director of the National Planning Service and member-secretary of its standing committee. In 1945 he became a member of the state commission for the study of the annexation question and a member of the state commission for revision of the Housing Act.
From his hand appeared publications including in the field of urban planning and planning, and as one knows Mr. Bakker Schut is on the board of the Construction Foundation. In November 1948, the Hague City Council decided to establish a department of reconstruction and urban development. Bakker Schut was appointed director of that service in 1949.
