E.F. van den Ban (1894-1973) Elizabeth Frederika van den Ban was an urban planner, including with Provincial Water Board of North Holland and with the Zuiderzee Works. On September 1, 1950, she was appointed permanent chief engineer at the Zuiderzeewerken, where, among other things, she made a major contribution to the spatial layout of Eastern Flevoland. Van den Ban was a daughter of an architect from Haarlem. She received her degree in 1918 from the Technical High School in Delft. After some time as a teacher at the later HBS-B in Haarlem, she joined the office of the Provincial Water Authority in North Holland April 20, 1926, in the rank of deputy commissioner, although she performed the work of an engineer. Relations, however, did not allow a woman to be designated with this title. In 1931, she became secretary of the standing committee on expansion plans. Eight years later followed her appointment as head of the Urban Planning Bureau of the Provincial Water Board. Ir. Van den Ban gained notoriety through her involvement with municipal expansion plans and through her work on the regional planning commission.
