J.D.C. Berrevoets (Zierikzee 18-02-1928; 23-01-2014) has photographed all kinds of events on Schouwen-Duiveland for nearly a quarter of a century. His photographs illustrated articles in the Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode, the PZC, Ons Eiland, and he supplied visual material to the ANP, among others. Johannes Dingeman Cornelis was born in Zierikzee on February 18, 1928, the son of carpenter-contractor Matthijs Berrevoets and Lijntje van Vessum. He attended the Ambachtschool. In the early fifties, Johan and his brother took over the business. The company did contracting work for, among others, Hotel Mondragon, Holty on Dam Square and shoe shop Jan Bom on Visstraat. Photography was Johan's hobby in those days. "An ordinary snapshot soon no longer satisfied me. It had to be more, have atmosphere and a certain quality." (1) Johan Berrevoets was socially involved. He was a long-time member of the volunteer fire department and did a lot of youth work and other church work for the Dutch Reformed Church in Zierikzee. At the age of 26 he married Thonny den Haan; they had three children. In the late sixties, Johan became seriously ill and could no longer work as a carpenter. He went looking for something else. It became photography. In the early 1970s he came into contact with the chief editor of the Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode Tinus Bij de Vaate. He thought his pictures were of good quality and found it an advantage that Johan could develop and print himself. Johan became a press photographer, first as a free lancer and from 1978 in permanent employment. In the years '70-'80 he was the press photographer of Schouwen-Duiveland, reporting on events. In addition, he made many beautiful portraits of well-known and unknown Schouwen-Duivelanders. He also loved the Schouwen-Duiveland landscape and paid a lot of attention to it. Touring around in his Citroën, he became a well-known and beloved Schouwen-Duivelander. At the age of 59 he developed such health problems that he had to stop as a press photographer (1987). Johan's wife Thonny died in 1994. From 1997 he lived together with Ellengard Jense. On 23-01-2014 Johan D.C. Berrevoets died at the age of 86.
