(Bonas essay) Willem Bert Ouëndag was born in Amsterdam on Oct. 28, 1899, the son of architect Bert Johan Ouëndag and Theodora Wilhelmina Koopman. He was married to Maria Arnolda Frederika Kluytenaar and had two children: Else Mary (born Aug. 1, 1931) and Robert Johan (born Sept. 7, 1934). Ouëndag attended elementary school and HBS in Amsterdam and then studied architecture at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft. During his final years of study, he was already working at his father's architectural firm. In 1927 he was officially admitted to the firm. Well-known works by W.B. Ouëndag are the headquarters of the Amsterdamsche Bank (together with H.P. Berlage), the building of the Bijenkorf department store in Rotterdam (together with Dudok), the Krankzinnigengesticht Oud-Rozenburg in Loosduinen and the Leeuwenterras of Artis in Amsterdam. He also designed many branches of the Amsterdamsche Bank. In Amsterdam, he designed the Kweekschool voor Machinisten at Overtoom in Amsterdam; the MTS at Plantage Muidergracht (with canteen and bicycle shed); Heineken's Bierbrouwerij, the Expedition Office of the Heineken brewery, the new berth building on Stadhouderskade and a remodeling of Heineken's headquarters; the van Brienenhuis; the Herengracht with residential and retail houses Raadhuisstraat; the building of the Maatschappij voor Havenwerken and the building of the Nederlandsche Levensverzekerings Mij. 1845 on Leidsestraat. He also worked in villa construction. Ouëndag was a board member of the MTS for Architecture and Hydraulic Engineering and the related Industrieschool for Architecture and Mechanical Engineering. He was also a board member of the Industrieschool for female youth, a member of the education committee of the Bond van Nederlandse Architecten and a board member of the foundation "Practisch werken" for young unemployed people in Amsterdam. He traveled virtually all over Europe to study foreign architecture. In his spare time he was involved in water sports, among other things.
