A.J.M. de Groot Anthonius Johannes Maria de Groot, born July 1, 1899 in Amsterdam, attended the three-year course at the Crafts School in Nijmegen from 1914 to 1917. After that, with an interruption because of his military service, he went to work as a volunteer with architect Oscar Leeuw in Nijmegen.From 1921 to 1941, A. de Groot worked at various large architectural offices in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague. At the architectural firm De Roos and Overeijnder he collaborates on the construction of the Ambachtsschool on the Beukelsdijk in Rotterdam and the office building 'Petrolea' in The Hague. This office building, built in the style of the Amsterdam School, was nicknamed "The Red Elephant" because of its 56-meter high tower and the red brick used. He assists architect P.L. Kramer from Amsterdam with the realization of the Bijenkorf department store in The Hague, also the last large building designed in the Amsterdam School style. He collaborates with architect Broese van Groenou on apartment building "Zorgvliet," and with the architectural firm Buijs and Lürsen he assists in the construction of the Rudolf Steiner Clinic in The Hague. In the service of architect G. Westerhout he was involved in hospital construction. In 1941 he joins the Ministry of Reconstruction and Housing as an architect on a permanent basis. In December 1952 he is still employed there. Further details about his career are lacking. A.J.M. de Groot died in Heerlen on August 9, 1981.
