Willem Cornelis de Groot, born Oct. 6, 1853 Hollum, died July 19, 1939 Leeuwarden. Came to Leeuwarden in 1871, was apprenticed to the architect Jacob Douma. Built the Gabbemagasthuis in Wijbrand de Geeststraat, the Juliana wing of the Nieuw Sint Anthonygasthuis, the Diaconessenhuis, the Noorderkerk, the new foundation of the Westerkerk. Designed housing complexes in the neighborhood Eigen Brood Bovenal, the Saskiastraten, the Hollanderwijk, the Oud-Indische buurt. W.C. de Groot was also a board member of the Christian High School and an elder of the Reformed Church. He lived at the Emmakade 43.
