He took his first steps in the construction world as supervisor/draughtsman for architect Vis in Alphen aan de Rijn and architect Van der Togt in Boskoop.
Then at the age of 22 he joined architect Dekker in Hazerswoude as an architectural draftsman. Dekker focused not only on new construction but also on restorations, including church buildings. This would prove to be important for Van der Sterre's further career.
In 1946, Piet van der Sterre established himself as an architect in Leiderdorp. He became a member of the BNA (Association of Dutch Architects) and worked intensively with architect Dekker. The name of the architectural firm was "Dekker & Van der Sterre". This collaboration lasted until 1955. After that, Van der Sterre continued independently.
