Gils, Jacobus Wilhelmus Anthonius van
J.W.A. van Gils (1865-1919)
Jacobus Wilhelmus Anthonus (Jac.) van Gils trained as an architect at the Academy in Antwerp; he then traveled through France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, drawing monumental churches. He became director of the Craft School in Maastricht, but soon established himself as an architect. He built many Roman Catholic churches, in North Brabant, and at the Scheveningseweg in The Hague, Schoorl, Delft, and Roskilde in Denmark, among others. In his hometown of Rotterdam, several mansions (including for Nijgh) and public buildings (including Maria van Doorn-gesticht) were designed by Van Gils.
Van Gils was particularly interested in public housing and in the Rotterdam Hofplein issue, on which he published his views repeatedly.
