West 8 is a design firm for urban planning and landscape architecture. Based in Rotterdam, the firm was founded in 1987 by Adriaan Geuze (winner of the Maaskant Prize for Young Architects). The firm also has offices in Brussels and New York. West 8 has contributed landscape architecture to large-scale urban designs such as the design and execution of the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam. Projects In the Netherlands, West 8 is responsible for projects such as the master plan for Borneo-Sporenburg, a large-scale housing project including "De Walvis" on two peninsulas in Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands, and for the bicycle and pedestrian bridges to the peninsulas. The design for the pedestrian bridge was nominated for the Design Prize Rotterdam 2001. In addition, West 8 has mainly been responsible for a number of original designs for bridges in the early years, such as the proposal for the "Reptile Bridge" between the Vinex location Leidsche Rijn and Utrecht; Most recently, the firm realized the pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the railroad in Aarschot, Belgium. Besides bridges, West 8 has profiled itself through urban planning and landscape projects such as the Master Plan for Vinex district Vathorst, and the Maximápark, former Leidsche Rijn Park. Furthermore, as part of Team CS, West 8 was involved in the design of Rotterdam Central Station. West 8 is also active in the United States with designs such as their unimplemented plan to turn the World Trade Center site into a meadow. West 8 was a finalist for the renovation of the New York Aquarium, and won the competition for a park (including free bikes) in the southern part of Governors Island, in New York Harbor.
