In 1919 the company H. Butzer of Dortmund established a branch in Rotterdam for the purpose of building a quay wall in the Vulcaanhaven (see No. III) for the German steel giant Thyssen. In 1924 the company became independent and was named Nederlandse Betonmaatschappij BATO, after the title of a play by P.C. Hooft. Director was Mr. Piel, who, as chief engineer, had set up Butzer's subsidiary in 1919. After World War II, BATO was converted into Bato-Jansen, which in turn was bought by Volker-Stevin. One of BATO's main clients was the Wilton shipyard, later Wilton-Feijenoord in Rotterdam. Many works in the port of Rotterdam were carried out by BATO. The repair work after the bombing, which began as early as 1942, was also carried out by BATO. Besides all kinds of works of art in the port of Rotterdam, there are the many bridges and water towers throughout the country. Furthermore, BATO is the executor of the concrete works of, among others, (the rebuilding of) the grain silo in Rotterdam to a design by Brinkman and Van de Vlugt, the repair works for the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam and the rebuilding of Huize Amstelrust (design J. Wils) in Amsterdam.
