\The friends Lauweriks and Wijdeveld were inspired by Oriental design and Japanese printing. Lauweriks had returned in 1914 from Germany, where he had worked from 1904/1905. There he had briefly edited the magazine Ring, which was in fact the source for Wendingen. Like De Bazel, he was under the influence of Theosophy and they were representatives of Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch version of Art Nouveau. Together with several other architects, they provided innovation within Architectura et Amicitia. It was also there that Wendingen was conceived. Already in the first issue of Wendingen it becomes clear that play and fantasy in architecture should bring architecture and theater together. Where Wendingen began as a monthly publication devoted to architecture, ornamentation and construction, it soon became a forum for contemporary issues in many different areas of art. In 1925 Wijdeveld quit Wendingen, of which he was designer and editor-in-chief. He felt that his career as an architect suffered too much from the time-consuming work, but he also dreamed of a magazine that would also focus on literature and music. Wendingen was published until 1932.
