Floris van den Broecke took drawing and painting classes at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem from 1961 to 1966. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London where he specialized in furniture design. Initially he combined painting and furniture design, but from 1977 he devoted himself entirely to furniture design. In 1985, he became professor of furniture design at the Royal College of Art. Van den Broecke formed a partnership with Jane Dillon and Peter Wheeler in 1986. He was also director of the design department of the Ercol furniture factory for many years. In the Netherlands, his work included interior and furniture designs for the building of the Postcheque- en Girodienst in Leeuwarden.
