Kitchens
With this booklet, authors aim to make the housewife's task easier by providing education to everyone involved in the construction and design of kitchens. The reason for writing Kitchens is the observation that too little attention is paid to kitchens in design and construction. There are too many defects in kitchens, new and old, that can be improved with little cost. Chapter two is about examples of efficient and functional kitchen fixtures. Chapter three is an analysis of existing poor kitchen fixtures as found in Amsterdam. For this purpose, Koen Limperg, together with photographer Kurt Kahle, made unannounced visits to people's homes to make a photographic record of existing conditions. Chapter four is a photo reportage on good kitchen design. This chapter contains examples of kitchens adapted by the residents themselves but also designed by architects such as Merkelbach and Karsten, Brinkman and v. d. Vlugt and L. H. de Koninck, architect from Belgium. There is also a chapter on general guidelines that can be used as points of interest when designing a good kitchen. Chapter five deals with proposals for kitchens in apartment buildings. These floor plans are designed to illustrate the general requirements that a kitchen should meet. The following chapter deals with new applications in the modern kitchen such as artificial lighting, central refrigeration systems, drying lofts for laundry, garbage disposal and the built-in fly box, from a design by K. Limperg. This chapter is followed by an overview of utilitarian items found in the kitchen. Finally, the last chapter contains project documentation of kitchen furnishings on a ship, the M.S. "Marnix van St. Aldegonde," and of a U. S. hotel-restaurant.
