Meyers, Ir. Gerard Johan. - Engineer Architect - Born in Amsterdam April 9, 1882
In Amsterdam he attended the H.B.S. and after graduation he enrolled at the T.H.S. in Delft where he received his diploma in 1904. Immediately thereafter he left for the Dutch East Indies as an engineer for the Civil Public Works Department, as one of his tasks was the first tapping of the Kloet crater lake.
Repatriated in 1910, he was honorably discharged from the National Service at his request and then worked for several years as ing. at the N.V. Nederlandse Betonijzerbouw. In 1914 he established himself as a consulting ing. and arch. in Amsterdam and Bussum.
In addition to many reinforced concrete constructions, among the buildings he produced as architect should be mentioned: a warehouse on the Zoutkeetsgracht in Amsterdam, commissioned by the N.V. Leydsche-Oranje Nassau Veem; buildings for the municipal gas factory in Leiden; the sugar factory in Halfweg, the Heemaf in Hengelo, a farm in Borssele and several residential houses.
His works are repeatedly favorably evaluated, (among others by arch. W.Kromhout Czn.) while pictures of his work were exhibited at various exhibitions.
Ir. Meyers is former second secretary of the Concrete Association; tutor for strength calculations at the M.T.S. in Utrecht and at the course for Continuing and Higher Construction Art Education in Amsterdam; delegate of the Royal Institute of Engineers at the P.N.B.A.-examinations; Member of the Order of the President of the Royal Institute of Engineers.examinations; Member of the Order of Dutch Consulting Engineers; Former member of the B.N.A. and its Committee of Education; Member of the Royal Institute of Engineers; Member of the Dutch East Indies Engineers' Society 'Eigen Beheer'; Member of the Municipal Committee of Supervision of Secondary Education and of Municipal Industrial Education in Bussum; Member of the Board of the Bussum branch of the General Union of Commuters.
Together with Koen Limperg and Mrs. R. Lotgering-Hillebrand, he wrote the book 'Kitchens' and published many articles in professional journals, a.o. about increasing theoretical requirements at the Technical Secondary School. - In connection with his assignments, Ir. Meyers made trips to Belgium, Germany, France, England and Italy.
Ir. Meyers died in Bussum on 11-10-1945.
