The former St. Agatha convent was founded in 1400 by the Franciscan Sisters and underwent many changes and additions. The front facade is from about 1470. The complex has a rich past. Under the direction of Architect N. Lansdorp, restoration of the Monastery complex began in 1940 and was completed in 1962. This involved the thorough repair and restoration of the buildings in Schoolstraat, the vaulted corridor at the entrance, the Walloon Church and the Gatehouse.This restoration is considered by N. Lansdorp to be the highlight of his career. Starting in 1962, the building was permanently occupied as the Stedelijk Museum.
