Piet Klaarhamer : architect and furniture designer
The versatile architect and designer Piet Klaarhamer (1874-1954) was mainly active in Utrecht and its surroundings. However, his oeuvre is of national importance when we study the history of architecture and design in the early twentieth century. Klaarhamer had contacts with architects such as Pierre Cuypers, H.P. Berlage, J.J.P. Oud, Robert van 't Hoff and with art painters Bart van der Leck and Vilmos Huszár and has so far been mentioned only in relation to these others. However, this does a disservice to his extraordinary body of work.
Piet Klaarhamer was an independent designer who sought innovation and purity. His furniture designs show clear constructions, honest use of simple woods without the application of decoration. Klaarhamer managed to transmit this language of form to his students, including the well-known architects Piet Elling and Gerrit Rietveld.
Housing blocks in the Utrecht districts of Wilhelminapark/Oudwijk and Oog in Al bear witness to his characteristic architectural views, also realized outside the city in a few country houses for private clients. Although his plans for building in reinforced concrete did not yet meet with much response, Klaarhamer opened ways for others to realize remarkable buildings.
This richly illustrated publication paints a picture of Klaarhamer as the essential link between the great master builder Berlage and avant-garde Stijl artists such as Gerrit Rietveld and Bart van der Leck. The book accompanies the exhibition "Klaarhamer according to Rietveld" at Centraal Museum, Utrecht, December 20, 2014 through March 25, 2015.
