Although structural engineer Bernard Bijvoet's list of works is impressively long and includes important and famous structures such as the Sanatorium Zonnestraal near Hilversum and the Maison de Verre in Paris, a retrospective of his work never appeared. The reason for this lies largely in Bijvoet's character. He liked to hide behind others and sacrificed himself in his collaboration with Jan Duiker, Pierre Chareau, Eugène Beaudouin, Marcel Lods and Gerard Holt. In the architectural history literature, he is therefore often assigned a secondary role, which by no means does justice to his significance for twentieth-century architecture. Renowned colleagues at home and abroad, including Le Corbusier, appreciated his work.
