B. Bijvoet (1889-1979) Bernard Bijvoet was educated at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft. Together with his fellow student Johannes Duiker, he worked for some time at the office of H. Evers in Rotterdam. Both were involved in work on the competition for the Rotterdam Town Hall. In 1917, Duiker and Bijvoet participated in the competition for the never realized new building for the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. The collaboration led to them jointly running an architectural firm in Zandvoort from 1919 to 1925. A number of projects also involved collaboration with the concrete structural engineer J.B. Wiebenga. Among other projects, Duiker and Bijvoet were responsible for the Zonnestraal sanatorium in Hilversum, which became an icon for the Nieuwe Bouwen movement in the Netherlands. After Duiker's death in 1934, Bijvoet completed the Theater and Grand Hotel Gooiland in Hilversum. By then, Bijvoet had already lived for some time in France, where he worked extensively with the architects Pierre Chareau, E.E. Beaudouin and M.G. Lods. After World War II, Bijvoet returned to the Netherlands. Together with G.H.M. Holt, he realized numerous projects. Holt and Bijvoet became best known for building theaters in provincial cities, including Tilburg, Nijmegen and Apeldoorn. These theaters were built as part of the cultural dispersal policy of the Dutch government. Bijvoet and Holt also designed plans for an opera house in Amsterdam just south of De Pijp. Eventually, these plans led to the construction of the Okura Hotel.
