Between 1869 and 1956, on Amsterdam's "Parisian boulevard," the Stadhouderskade, stood the Henriëtte Hofje, built in Old Dutch style. It was founded by Jacob de Vos and Henriëtte Wurfbain, wealthy Amsterdammers who used their wealth for extraordinary things. They supported a variety of projects: education, mercy and poor care, but also showed a great passion for the visual arts in particular. Jacob de Vos is best known for building the largest collection of drawings of old masters in the Netherlands and for using his patriotism as a patron to promote history painting. With a unique painting project, he created a "little Versailles" in his city palace on the Herengracht. The auction of his collection was the direct cause of the founding of the Rembrandt Association, and his drawings allowed the collection of the National Print Room to be doubled in one fell swoop.
