'The most beautiful spectacle of modern times'. This is how architect Le Corbusier described the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam when he visited it in 1932. The factory was built in the late 1920s as a coffee, tea and tobacco factory to provide space for the rapidly growing company De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle. On the initiative of director Kees van der Leeuw, the Rotterdam architectural firm Brinkman and Van der Vlugt designed a light and spacious factory. His choice of architecture that offered an efficient and healthy working environment fundamentally improved the lives of factory workers. Since 2014, the Van Nelle Factory can be found on the World Heritage List.
