The author describes Haan's life and work and places him in the second generation of modernists just after World War II. Vollaard: "His life and work thereby illustrate the turn from mechanistic functionalism to a humane modernism propagated by the 'Forum generation'. Vollaard places Haan between Dutch architects Jan Rietveld and Hein Salomonson, and foreign architects such as Marcel Breuer and Arne Jacobsen. Yet he sees Gerrit Rietveld as Haan's main source of inspiration. Influences from Africa are harder to trace, but, according to Vollaard, can be found in the public, communal nature of the patio houses on the T.H. campus, among other things. In addition, he sees the direct, uncomplicated simplicity of the Dogon reflected in Haan's work. Haan also has peers and students interested in African culture, including students at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture and the T.H. in Eindhoven.
