Realization design first phase, November 1, 1995, realization second phase design March 2, 1996.Most urgent at the Rijksmuseum was the improvement of the indoor climate by replacing the installations. The museum, built in different periods and styles, quietly situated on the canal around the center, is characterized by a horizontal succession of spaces organized around two inner courtyards. This inward-looking character has been maintained, but by adding new functions a tranformation takes place. Next to the monumental staircase at the entrance, a ramp has been laid, already announcing these interventions. The conventional entrance hall overlooks the newly created courtyard garden. This courtyard garden again plays a game together with the leaning box that bulges out of the existing building. This bulge is again connected to the added hall of honor located in the second courtyard. The museum wants to develop as a cultural center for Enschede and the surrounding area.
