The architect and designer Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927) is now best known as the "father of the Amsterdam School," but he was much more than that. Against the strongly national-bound 'rationalism' of Berlage and his followers, he was a protagonist of the cosmopolitan-oriented eclectic movement in architecture. He proved himself a virtuoso in a variety of styles and built up an extensive oeuvre both in the Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies. Besides being an architect, Eduard Cuypers was also an interior designer and decorative artist, founding the "Atelier voor decoratieve kunst Het Huis. He also published a number of magazines that focused not only on building and decorative arts, but also on folk art, local history and many facets of the Insulinde.
