The architect, structural engineer and archaeologist Henri Maclaine Pont was born in the 'Dutch East Indies' and educated in the Netherlands at the Technical High School in Delft. He subsequently returned to 'the Dutch East Indies' to live and work there. Central to his thinking and design is an interest in the architecture of his country. He also speaks highly of the capabilities of local craftsmen and their attitude and commitment. In doing so, Maclaine Pont demonstrates as one of the few architects trained in Europe that indigenous, historical and European contemporary architecture are quite compatible. He studies and publishes on indigenous architecture, such as the pendopo, a building type that is eminently storm and earthquake resistant. Around 1928, he gradually developed the prototype of a roof structure that could be considered an improved version of the pendopo. For the commission for a church in Puhsarang, for which he was awarded the contract in 1936, he made this prototype. Maclaine Pont also manages to train some 150 construction workers in the execution of this project.
