Emmen, Jan C.

J. Emmen (1889-1965) Jan Emmen graduated from the TH in Delft in 1915 as a civil engineer. He gained great fame with his unexecuted design for a bridge over the Koningshaven, the Queen's Bridge. This rejected design led to a dissertation Reinforced concrete and iron in bridge construction. Emmen received his doctorate from TH Delft on February 20, 1934. From 1915-1919, Emmen worked as a structural engineer at the Rotterdam Bureau Kuipers. In 1919 he became a structural engineer at the Dienst Landsgebouwen, which in 1935 merged into the then established Rijksgebouwendienst. There he was appointed director of the construction bureau. In that capacity, he was responsible for 35 years for what the Government Buildings Agency accomplished in the field of construction. Despite his training as a concrete structural engineer, he had an eye for design. He knew how to combine the constructive and the architectural. As an architect he adhered to the ideas of Nieuwe Bouwen.
