Plantenga, Jan Hendrik

After the HBS in Rotterdam, he studied at TH Delft where he graduated as a structural engineer in 1919. In 1925 he obtained his doctorate cum laude. Meanwhile, he was already working at the Bureau Monumentenzorg; from 1920-1923 he was employed as an engineer at the Rijksgebouwendienst. Then he had an independent practice in Wassenaar for six years. At the same time, he was an architecture teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague for eight years, of which he became director in 1929. Published a number of important works on architecture, especially on the French Baroque. The story goes that he took his own life because he could not live with the ruin of several cathedrals during the war. Jan Hendrik never knew his biological mother; she died two months after his birth.
